Our first feature on Gidi’s Young Enterprise Is Folarin Falana Aka FALZ who is a recording artiste.Folarin ‘Falz’ Falana took up Rap as a hobby towards the end of his secondary school education. Growing up listening to the likes of Nigerian legends Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Tribesmen, Plantashun Boiz and several other local and international big names, ‘Falz’ gradually unravelled his talent in music. He was initially particular about rap/hip-hop as opposed to anything else before he discovered his love for other genres of music. He wrote a few mediocre verses at first, just like any beginner would have, but as mediocrity has never been attached to his name, he soon blew many away with impressive rap performances. He performed to local audiences and quickly gained recognition far and wide while improving lyrically. His exceptionally unique style differs him from many other modern rappers while giving him the upper hand. Due to this uniqueness, he has not often been compared to other musicians.
GidiNoize’ Interview with FALZ
1. WHO IS FALZ?
My real name is Folarin Falana and I’m a potential Hip-hop superstar!
2. CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND (EDUCATIONAL/FAMILY)?
Educational: I grew up in Nigeria and after graduating from secondary school, I moved to England where I’m currently studying Law at the University of Reading. Yea I’m actually studying Law!.. Family: I’m the only son of Mr. Femi Falana, I have a beautiful mum and two lovely sisters
3. WHEN DID YOU REALIZE MUSIC WAS YOUR CALLING AND WHAT GENRE ARE YOU INTO?
I realised I had some sorta’ spark in me when I was in ss1 (year 10). That’s when I started writing rap verses! Obviously verses I wrote then, compared to what I write now, were not the most amazing but then it was great stuff! And I guess a lot has changed since then. My Genre is Hip-hop n’ RnB mainly.
4. WE UNDERSTAND THAT YOU HAVE TAKEN PART IN VARIOUS SHOWS CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THEM?
Yes indeed! I have been quite an active performer here in the U.K. I mostly perform at university events but I’ve done other shows which involved big Nigerian artists such as Naeto C and 9ice.
5. WHAT HAS BEEN THE GREATEST MOMENT OF YOUR MUSICAL CAREER?
Well, there’ve been a number of good times but I ‘ld say during my latest performance when I just felt the crowd was very much with me. It’s a very satisfying feeling as an Artist to see with your own eyes that you’re actually touching lives with your music! Great stuff.
6. OUTSIDE THE MUSIC SCENE WHO IS FALZ?
Outside the music scene he’s not Falz again he’s Folarin. Just a young man still studying and planning out a bright future for himself. A pretty cool dude as well.
7. WHERE DO YOU PICTURE YOURSELF IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS?
In the next 5 years I see myself as a pretty successful Musician/ Hip-Hop superstar and a role model to many.
8. THERE ARE A COUPLE OF RAPPERS IN THE NIGERIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY, WHAT CAN YOU BRING TO THE TABLE THAT OTHERS HAVEN’T?
The Nigerian music industry keeps getting better everyday and you know to make it as a rapper it’s either you’re lyrically a force or you’re just simply a hit-maker! I personally believe I’ve got both these qualities and also the tendency to add that comic flavour to my music. This is what makes me unique.
9. GROWING UP, WHO WERE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?
Speaking of influences when I was growing up, we are talking Fela Anikulapo Kuti, we are talking Trybesmen, plantashun boiz! These people made music sweet and desirable. Internationally on the other hand, it’s always been more of the contemporary stuff, the Kanye Wests, the Lil Waynes, you know. Yea that’s the sorta’ stuff I listened to while growing up
10. WHAT DO YOU THINK THE NIGERIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY IS LACKING?
I think what the Nigerian music industry is lacking is international recognition. To be fair we probably produce the best stuff in Africa but as far as the whole world is concerned, we are local champions and I think we need and deserve some more recognition internationally.
11. WHAT’S THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR SONGS AND ‘SHAKARA’ IN PARTICULAR?
What I do when I write songs is just to try to appeal to everyone with my music and just rap about everyday things that we can all relate to. ‘Shakara’ showed the comic side of Falz and that’s basically what it was supposed to do. I just thought I’d produce something funny and enjoyable.
12. IS THERE AN ALBUM OR MIXTAPE IN THE WORKS AND WHEN CAN WE EXPECT IT TO DROP?
Right now I’m working on a mixtape which is titled ‘SHAKARA’! It’s going to be out and available for FREE download this December (2009) so Watch oUt! It’s definitely gonna be hott.
13. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER UPCOMING ARTISTES?
Follow your dream. If music is really your passion and you think you have what it takes to be successful then go for it! But make sure there is something unique about you as a musician!
14. ANY LAST WORDS FOR YOUR FANS?
