GidiNoize Interviews HYM

1. WE AT GIDINOIZE COULDN’T HELP BUT NOTICE YOUR NAME. HOW DID IT COME ABOUT?

lol.hmmm…lets see,ok when I started rappin,i wanted to use the name ‘nas’ but alotta ppl said it would be just a copy of the other nas so I thought to my self, instead of using nas,why not hym….referring to nas but as him. And then the name also goes a long way to show how even people that don’t know my name know me as “him’ the guy that raps….so I decided to stick to ‘hym’

2.WHO IS ‘HYM’?

HYM is Abubakar Muhammed Abidemi Nasir an ordinary guy with a very funny sense of humour and weird lifestyle u can say…loll

3.CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND(EDUCATIONAL, FAMILY)?

Well graduated from Whitesands school last year July and enrolled into the New York university but after facing some problems(personal) have withdrawn and is due to go to Ukraine instead.i come from an extended family and am the 2nd born from my mama’s side. My mother is Ghanaian and my father is from Kano, though my grand mum is half Ghanaian and half Yoruba.

3. WHEN DID YOU REALIZE MUSIC WAS YOUR CALLING?

I realized music was or is my calling when I wrote my first 16brs and gave them to my friends to read…even though I wasn’t serious about music knew I had something in me. But now am ready to face and make the best out of it.

4. WHAT GENRE ARE YOU INTO AND WHY?

Am majorly into hip hip(rap) and a very little of r&b and techno(its a new combination of techno beats and hardcore rap lyrics) because I am trying to connect with listeners of these different genres as they seem to be the highest in population and are very wide scoped.

5. HOW DO YOU MANAGE YOUR STUDIES & MUSICAL CAREER TOGETHER?

Ah!…that’s 1 of the major challenges faced by young artistes today as many of us are still in school…this is part of the reasons why I withdrew from NYU,due to the fact that I was inclined more towards rap than my education that it alarmed a number of people in my family try my best now though to make sure I find a very balanced timetable for everything…I dedicate 3 hours of everyday to writing and some 7 to studying and so far so good… :) being 1 of the most highly anticipated and respected rappers of my time face a lot of criticism and haterocism and it makes me feel like a success as I must be unique and special to draw such attention…u feel me?…so am cool with all the things that come my way.

6. WE UNDERSTAND THAT YOU HAVE TAKEN PART IN SHOWS CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THEM?

Yeah I have taken part in a number of shows…not very major but good shows…last year summer I performed with a group of friends at the concrete rose concert and we tore up the stage, december last year too were a couple of about 3 shows I did around Lagos and a lot of other performances at parties and schools around urban Lagos…looking forward to some other shows in December too so I feel great. Yes I do.haha

7.WHAT HAS BEEN THE GREATEST MOMENT OF YOUR MUSICAL CAREER?

Well I remember this 1 time when I had to perform in front of artistes like modenine, alibi, kel and m.i and after my performance got a standing ovation from all of them including the crowd…when one of them was asked why they stood, he said “because he owned us”…so yeah, that was a great moment for me as a young artiste.

8. OUTSIDE THE MUSIC SCENE WHO IS HYM?

Outside the music scene,…..ummmmm…am almost always 24hours HYM so its almost very impossible to differentiate but my close friend that know both nas and HYM know am a very cool, loud and stubborn boy that likes a laugh…..ha-ha.

9. ARE YOU SINGLE?

I am single yes…but there are a couple of ladies I am interested in at the moment…no names for now…lol.

10. APART FROM MUSIC YOU HAVE ANY OTHER AREAS OF INTEREST?

Yes I do….I love watching sitcoms, swimming and writing poems….oh yeah I play basketball too.

11. DO YOU INTEND GOING INTO MUSIC FULL TIME?

I intend to by Gods graces remain in the music scene till I am about 35…then I’ll practice law. So I pray to reign for about 17 years. God willing.

12. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE NEXT 10 YEARS?

Begging for competition….probably tired of being the best…haha

13.THERE IS A COUPLE OF RAPPERS IN THE NIGERIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY, WHAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT?

Ah, u know now…am the most commercial lyricist so far, my versatility I must say…I can rap about basically anything.

14. GROWING UP, WHO WERE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?

That most definitely got to be Biggie,em,lil wayne, juelz, talib kweli, common, immortal technik and rakim…that sorta explains my lyrical inclination.listening to biggie gave me the edge I needed to be aggressive and juelz, lyrics

15. WHAT DO YOU THINK THE NIGERIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY IS LACKING AND CAN FILL THE VOID?

What the Nigerian music industry is lacking is unity.everybody wants to be unique and they do that in the most awkward ways ever no one succeeds without help from somewhere….artistes need to work together more often to give the industry its stir…and the youth should have a voice too…

16. DO YOU WRITE YOUR OWN RAP?

Yes

17.WHAT’S THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR RAPS?

Umm, I inspire me mostly but sumtymz the beats help…I rap according to my mood mostly though

High school or Secondary School was King’s College… Yes yes yes! I went to KC and I’m PROUD…lol… but at the moment I’m studying Business and Management at Aston University.

3. WHEN DID YOU REALIZE MUSIC WAS YOUR CALLING?

I realized music was my calling I think at the age of 4 when I used to mime songs and at the age of 9 I started writing my own version of ‘em songs and would do it with my cousin . Thought I picked it up seriously at age 13 and that is writing my own songs but I listened to 1 recently and I could not stop laughing. Lol… but now I’m on a serious p.!

4. WHAT GENRE ARE YOU INTO AND WHY?

I’m into Hip-Hop, Rap and R&B because I enjoy listening to songs from ‘em (genres)

5. HOW DO YOU MANAGE YOUR STUDIES & MUSICAL CAREER together?

Basically, I do not see it as a big deal. Like I know when its time for music and time for school and I do not joke with school. So to me, its education first and then music, unless the music is real important then I can RECONSIDER…lol

6. BEING A YOUNG ARTISTE COMES WITH A LOT OF CRITICISM AND DISAPPROVAL ESPECIALLY FROM PARENTS ,HOW DO YOU COPE WITH THAT?

True that! But my parents know I’m into music but they think I joke with it and all but my mom is actually feeling RECONSIDER and I’m happy about that.

Yes I have! It’s been wonderful working with other talents like OL-stAr, Sonia Irabor, Tosyn, Lanray, etc. I enjoy working with people because I love hearing other people on my record and it also helps in your music career by letting you know where your problem is and how you can become better and all.

11. APART FROM MUSIC DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER AREAS OF INTEREST?

Umm I don’t know but my close friends say if I should drop music I should become a Comedian. *confused*…lol…I dont know why but maybe because I’m a little funny or they want me to embarrass myself.

Why not? If I get a big record deal I would surely sign, sharp sharp…loll

13. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE NEXT 10 YEARS?

Wow! God willing, a Hip Hop mogul or a self made billionaire and I mean more than Warren Buffett :) and again God willing (AMEN).

14. THERE ARE A COUPLE OF ARTISTES IN THE NIGERIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY, WHAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT?

Umm..! I think for the fact that I talk real stuff in my music. Like most people talk about love and stuff like ”ur the sugar in my tea, I love you till death.”, blah blah blah’…lol. But Reconsider talks about the opposite which most people don’t do.

15. GROWING UP, WHO WERE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES?

Jay-Z., he’s my number one influence, by the way y’all should go get Blueprint 3 if you havn’t., its crazy…umm.., Kanye West, Mase, Biggie Smalls, Lil Wayne, Trybesmen.,they were hot in Gidi at their time and i was a great fan, ye.! A lot more but these are like the major ones I can remember atm.

16. WHAT DO YOU THINK THE NIGERIAN MUSIC INDUSTRY IS LACKING AND CAN FILL THE VOID?

I seriously don’t think the Nigerian Industry is lacking anything big. On reals, Nigerian musicians are talented and make great music for everyone. Like I was in a club yesterday and they were playing Nigerian songs and white people were feeling it even though they don’t understand what they saying but the music still makes ‘em move and that’s a very great thing

17. DO YOU WRITE YOUR OWN SONGS?

Yezzir!

18. I FIND ‘RECONSIDER’ AND ‘OUTTA MY MIND’ REALLY INTERESTING CUZ THEY PORTRAY 2 DIFFERENT TYPES OF GUYS, WHICH OF THEM ARE YOU OR ARE YOU BOTH? LOL

Lol… Reconsider, that’s mine and Outta My Mind that’s my cousin OL-stAr but I co-produced the track but for your question, I’m kind of like both guys ;-) .

19. WHATS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR SONGS?

The inspiration is what goes on around me at that moment either in the world or what’s going on in my life.

The Beef Between M.I And Iceberg Slim

VERSUS

So many things have been speculated such as a freestyle/rap battle between Iceberg Slim and M.I amongst other things due to specific lines in Iceberg’s song which’s lyrics go like this

I am tired of the same ol’ question that they all ask about me

Am I better than M.I?

I don’t know. Am I?

Matter of fact,

you should ask M.I

M.I on the other hand recently released a track in reply to Iceberg titled “Somebody wants to die” in which he gave an overall kick to those hating on his shine with lines like

“Yes I do do BEEF but right now i’m fasting…You don’t even want it anyway so why you asking?…N**as want drama i’mma holla when i’m casting.”

2 days later Iceberg Slim kicked subliminals “Somebody Wants To Die“, I’ll be responsible for the “Assassination” …let the countdown begin…(I told em it would be a M.I.stake, but they didn’t listen)”

According to Sauce Kid’s recent status ‘updates on Facebook it seems he is in full support of Iceberg Slim Therefore Inherititing the beef between M.I and Iceberg. Could this really be a controversy brewing or just a popularity stunt? Who knows? You be the judge.
